WSET Level 1 Award in Wines  

This program introduces students in a structured way to wine styles, storing and serving of wine, and food and wine matching. This is a two-day program. All wine, printed materials, and the exam is included. Printed certificates and lapel pin mailed upon receipt of exam results. 

 

Course Outline

Teaches basic wine knowledge, how to taste wine like a professional, proper wine storage, and food & wine pairing

  • The entry-level qualification provides a straightforward introduction to wine

  • Great for enthusiasts and hospitality professionals

  • Includes study booklet, wine, wine pairing, lunch, review session, and exam. Passing students receive a certificate and lapel pin in the mail.

Class Location

The instructional will be held at Urban Hill (510 S 300 W #100, SLC, UT 84101).

The Exam will be held at the Ken Garff Scholarship Club. , located in the Rice Eccles Stadium on the University of Utah campus (451 South 1400 East, Salt Lake City, UT 84112). A parking pass and detailed instructions will be provided for the exam sight.

COURSE DETAILS

The WSET Level 1 Award in Wine includes 6 hours of classroom instruction, all study materials, wines, and exam.

This introductory wine certification course teaches students through sight, smell, and taste to understand more about wine. By the end of class, you’ll be able to taste wine using a systematic approach to tasting and be able to identify the main styles of wine. You’ll also learn the fundamental principles of food and wine pairing and be able to apply these to your food and wine choices.  

The Wine Academy of Utah students also receive a review study session in preparation for the Level 1 WSET exam. Tasting is an essential part of studying for this course, and you will enjoy guided tastings of 10 - 12 wines perfectly suited for calibrating your palate to WSET's Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting.  

To obtain the WSET Level 1 Award Certificate in Wine, you will need to successfully pass the 30 multiple-choice exam. Exam orders are placed 21 days prior to the exam date and you cannot change the date once that order has been placed with the WSET.  Results take 4-5 weeks to be released by WSET.

WSET Level 2 Award in Wines  

This course provides an all-around product knowledge and education. This course is structured for industry trade members in the areas of retail, hospitality, sales, production, and distribution/wholesale. Serious wine consumers with an interest in a deeper industry knowledge or pursuing a career in the field may also field this helpful. This course focuses on key grape varieties and regions of the world.

Wine production and factors influencing it

  • Sparkling, sweet, and fortified wines

  • Label terminology

  • Food and Wine pairing

  • WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine

The class will be hosted at Casot Wine Bar, located in the heart of the 15th and 15th neighborhood in Salt Lake City.

COURSE DETAILS

Standard in person classes are taught over 8 weekly sessions leading up to the exam. You will taste over 60 plus wines throughout the 8 week program, receive a study review, and receive printed certificate and lapel pin recognizing your level of achievement. Our pass rate for this course is over 98%.

The Wine Academy of Utah students also receive; orientation session you can elect to attend to receive your study kit prior to the start of the 8 sessions, end of term full two hour ‘review study session’ in preparation for the Level 2 WSET exam, and receive unlimited email support with instructor, class syllabus, homework assignments, and more!

You can plan on a minimum of 28 hours of study time, which includes classroom time, 11 hours of personal study and review, and the 1 hour exam.

To obtain the WSET Level 2 Award Certificate in Wine, you will need to successfully pass the 50 multiple-choice exam. Exam orders are placed 21 days prior to the exam date and you cannot change the date once that order has been placed with the WSET.  Results take 4-5 weeks to be released by WSET.
